Voice care, planned with the rest of your surgery
Pitch, resonance, and the way your voice sits in a room. Surgical and non-surgical options under one roof, with therapy before and after when it helps.
A voice plan, not a single procedure
Voice is one of the first things people register, and one of the last things a general plastic surgery practice is built to hold. At Chrisalys Surgery, voice surgery and gender-affirming speech-language pathology sit on the same team as face, chest, and body care. That means your voice plan can be sequenced with FFS, a tracheal shave, or a traveling-patient itinerary instead of being referred out and started from scratch.
Dr. Toby Mayer and the voice team work in this space: Wendler glottoplasty and related pitch-raising techniques, masculinizing thyroplasty when testosterone has not done enough, and therapy that trains resonance, intonation, and speech patterns whether or not you ever have surgery.
Many Medi-Cal, LA Care, IEHP, and private plans treat medically necessary voice procedures as gender-affirming care. Coverage still depends on your product and on documentation. Start at Insurance or pre-authorization if you want that pathway opened before the consult.

What to expect.
Consultation
We listen to your goals, record a baseline, and decide whether surgery, therapy, or both belong in the plan.
Therapy or surgical mapping
If surgery is appropriate, we review technique, voice-rest, and how it sits next to other procedures. Therapy can start before the operating room.
Procedure and recovery
Surgical patients follow a voice-rest protocol, then return to guided therapy. Non-surgical patients continue sessions until the voice feels stable.
Follow-through
Pitch is only one measure. We check how the voice holds in conversation, on the phone, and in rooms that matter to you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need surgery to change my voice?
No. Many patients reach a voice they recognise through speech-language pathology alone. Surgery is for people whose anatomy, after hormones and therapy, still will not sit where they need it.
Can voice surgery be combined with FFS or a tracheal shave?
Sometimes, and sometimes it should be staged. A tracheal shave and glottoplasty both involve the larynx. We sequence them so the airway and the vocal folds are not asked to heal at odds with each other.
Does insurance cover gender-affirming voice care?
Many California plans, including Medi-Cal, LA Care, and IEHP, cover medically necessary voice surgery and therapy. Benefits vary. Verify yours at /insurance or start pre-authorization at /insurance/pre-authorization.
