Hair Removal for Gender-Affirming Surgery

Hair removal planned on a surgical calendar

Laser for bulk reduction. Electrolysis for clearance. Both timed to an operative date, not sold as a spa extra.

The approach

Why this sits next to surgery

Genital-site clearance is a surgical prerequisite for vaginoplasty and gates the operative date. Donor-site hair on a forearm or thigh flap is the same kind of problem for phalloplasty. These pages are clinical, even though the menu lists them under Spa.

Laser devices are cleared for permanent hair reduction. Only electrolysis may be described as permanent hair removal. We keep that distinction on every page because it is both an FDA rule and useful to patients choosing a method.

Start at pre-operative clearance if you already have a surgical date, or laser versus electrolysis if you do not.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is laser the same as electrolysis?

No. Laser offers permanent hair reduction on the right hair and skin. Electrolysis destroys individual follicles and is the method that can be called permanent hair removal. Many surgical-clearance plans use both.

When should I start before surgery?

Often many months before a genital reconstruction date. See the timeline. Starting in the last weeks is how dates move.
